Custom Web & API Development
Bespoke web applications and APIs built to production standard — internal tools, customer-facing platforms, integrations — with the architecture to support them long after go-live.
Most software briefs start with a good idea and end with a fragile prototype nobody wants to maintain. We build production software from the start: proper architecture, clean APIs, code that a developer can work in two years from now without cursing whoever wrote it. If off-the-shelf covers the job, we'll tell you that and save you the cost.
We've shipped everything from internal operations tools to national-scale platforms — including a visual voicemail system that handled millions of calls a day across New Zealand, the UK and the US, built and run fully in-house. The brief doesn't have to be that large, but the standard of what we build doesn't change with the size.
- Web application development using modern frameworks, sized to the problem and no bigger
- REST and GraphQL API design and development, built for real integration rather than demo use
- Internal tooling: dashboards, admin interfaces, ops workflows your team will actually use
- Customer-facing platforms with the UX and performance that public-facing software requires
- Database design and data modelling, with migrations and versioning from day one
- Architecture documentation so the system is understandable and extensible, not a black box
Quick questions
How do you decide what to build vs what to buy?
It used to be simple: buy off-the-shelf, because custom was slow and expensive and only paid off for the problem nothing else solved. AI has changed that. We build with AI-assisted tooling, so custom software now ships faster and costs a lot less than it used to. The real question is no longer whether custom is worth the premium. It's whether you want software shaped to your business, or your business shaped to someone else's product. If a cheap tool genuinely does the job we'll still say so, but far more is worth building than was even a year ago.
What if we already have a partially built system?
That's common. We review what exists, give you an honest assessment of what's worth keeping, and work from there. We don't assume everything needs to be rebuilt, but we won't paper over problems to avoid the conversation.
Do you build for any particular technology stack?
We work across the mainstream modern stacks and choose based on the problem and the team that'll maintain it. We're not advocates for a single framework. What we won't do is introduce a stack you can't hire for or that creates a dependency only we can manage.
We've shipped systems still running a decade later.
Custom software, AI agents and automation for real business problems. We design, build and run production systems — not prototypes. We ship working software that scales from a first version to national platforms. All of Build →
